Buses from Ilha Grande to Rio de Janeiro

When travelling from Ilha Grande to Rio de Janeiro, you’ll first need to take a boat to one of the following locations: Angra dos Reis, Mangaratiba or Conceição de Jacareí. 

 

You can get to Rio de Janeiro by public ferry and a local bus, or take daily transfer that depart Abraao on Ilha Grande. Taking local transport involves crossing the island by ferry from the township of Vila do Abraão to one of the above mentioned towns, and then making your way to where the bus departs enroute to Rio. When you arrive to the bus station in Rio, you then make your own way to your accommodation. By taking one of the daily transfers, you take a pre-booked boat to the mainland where a van is waiting to transfer you to your accommodation in Rio.

How do you get from Ilha Grande to Rio by ferry and local bus?

The bus company Costa Verde covers the bus route from Mangaratiba, Conceição de Jacareí, and Angra dos Reis, to Rio de Janeiro. Their buses are modern, equipped with onboard lavatories and depart every day from 07:00am until 21:00pm. Costa Verde buses arrive to the Terminal Rodoviário Novo Rio in Rio de Janeiro and departure times can be found at their website: www.costaverdetransportes.com.br

How do you get from Ilha Grande to Rio via Mangaratiba?

Mangaratiba may be the closest arrival point for boats from Ilha Grande to Rio de Janeiro, but the boat trip takes 1 hour and 45 minutes to Magaratiba (23Km). For more information on boat departures you can call Saveiro Desirre Ph#: (24) 3370-5584.

 

From here the buses take around 2 hours to get Rio, but at the same time the departures are least frequent as the other locations. The bus company Costa Verde has about 4 departures a day from the town's terminal, but all of the buses from Angra dos Reis can pick you up by the side of the road as they pass the town.

How do you get from Ilha Grande to Rio via Conceicao de Jacarei?

The wooden vessel Saveiro Andréa departs from Abraão (Ilha Grande) to Conceição de Jacareí, and the journey is done in 50 minutes. The ticket costs about R$ 15.00 per person (Monday to Friday) / Saturdays, Sundays and holidays R$ 20.00 per person. Saveiro Andréa Ph#: (21) 9744-0732. 

 

From the departure dock it's about a 15 minutes walk until you reach the main road where the buses stop. Conceicao de Jacarei has the advantage of being the closest point from Ilha Grande to the mainland with a crossing time of 40 minutes to an hour, plus it has the most regular ferry departures out of the three towns due to its close proximity. 

 

For anyone suffering from seasickness this problem will be minimized by making the crossing here.

 

To reach Rio de Janeiro the bus journey from Conceição de Jacareí takes around  2.5 hours and you can take the Costa Verde bus to the Novo Rio Terminal. In Conceição de Jacareí you will be required to walk to the main road where the Costa Verde bus stops on side of the road as they pass through the town at KM 455 of the Rio-Santos highway.

How do you get from Ilha Grande to Rio via Angra dos Reis?

Although Angra dos Reis is the furthest of the 3 options to Rio, and also the furthest jdrop-off point from Ilha Grande for boats crossing, leaving from there is straight forward because once you arrive to the port town you can catch your bus from the bus terminal which has all the associated facilities.

 

The daily large ferry departs Vila do Abraão pier on Ilha grande everyday at 10:00am and from Monday to Friday costs R$7,  but on the weekends and public holidays it doubles in price. The crossing takes about 1:45 hours and you arrive to the Cais da Lapa dock.

 

There are catamarans at higher prices but with upgraded amenities, such as the Catamaran IGT, connecting Ilha Grande with Angra in only 45 minutes (R$ 25) and arriving to the Cais de Santa Luzia. Other options include private schooners, which have no fixed schedule and only depart with enough people to mak ethe journey worthwhile for the captain.

 

Costa Verde has departures from Angra dos Reis to the Novo Rio Terminal every hour between 04:00am and 21:00pm. The trip costs around R$41 and takesabout three hours to get to the Rio de Janeiro bus terminal. The bus station of Angra dos Reis (Terminal Rodoviário Nilton Barbosa) is located on "Praia da Chácara", its about 2.5 km from downtown which is about a 20 minute walk from the docks or around R$20 by taxi. The terminal address is Av. Daily Transfer from Ilha Grande to Rio de Janeiro

There are 2 transfers per day which depart from the Abraao central dock. The first departs at 10am and arrives to Rio at 13:30pm approximately. The second transfer departs the same docks at 13:00pm and the usual arrival time is 17:00pm depending on traffic.
